Traffic awareness

Andrea Bertolozzi Dec 03, 2018 12:29PM CET

Dear all,

I recently used my Air Navigation Pro for iOS (version 7.2 on iPad) to support a VFR/ULM flight in Italy, and this was the first time I saw a traffic information on the moving map (very accurate indeed, by the way). That surprised me, since I read from the Air Navigation Pro user manual that traffic information could be displayed only “when connected to an ADS-B or FLARM transmitter”. My iPad was not connected to any external device, it took information from iPad internal sensors and cellular internet connection only.
So, my question is: how does traffic awareness actually work? Without external transmitter connection am I still able to see traffic (it seemed so…)? But maybe others won’t see me? Or what?

Thank you for giving me explanation, this is important to me since traffic awareness plays a key role in flight safety.

Hi Andrea

I mean the traffic indicator works additionally based on the app itself. This is the case if someone else also use this app (AirNavPro) and is connected to the account. In addition, he must have turned on the appropriate service. (Tools-> Sensors-> Traffic Sensors-> Air Navigation Traffic Service.) However, this type of traffic display is not very reliable because it needs an active internet connection and the others also need to use AirNavPro. (And have turned on the service). Is there a good internet connection over 10000 feet?

Thanks for the reply, Dani.

I think this was just my case. I was at the runway holding point waiting for a traffic to land, looked at AirNavPro moving map and noticed that the landing airplane was displayed on the screen. So, for sure we both had a reliable internet connection in that moment. And, yes, maybe he was running AirNavPro as well with the right setup.
This also explains why I did not see any other traffic that that one.

Thank you,

Hi Andrea, hi Dani,

thanks for your messages and participation in our support forum.

As Dani explained, the Air Navigation Traffic Service uses internet to show the position of other Air Navigation Users. That user has to also have an internet connection and the feature has to be turned on on his device.

Happy landings
